Indications And Clinical Uses : The treatment of conjunctivitis, corneal ulcer, and other superficial ocular infections due to susceptible microorganisms, and as adjunctive treatment in systemic therapy of trachoma.:

Contra-Indications: Hypersensitivity to sulfonamide preparations.

Precautions: The solutions are incompatible with silver preparations. Ophthalmic ointments may retard corneal healing. Nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi, may proliferate with the use of these preparations. Do not use solutions if colored. Sulfonamides may be inactivated by the para-aminobenzoic acid present in purulent exudates. If sensitivity reactions occur, discontinue treatment.

Dosage And Administration: 30% Solution: Conjunctivitis or corneal ulcer: 1 drop into lower conjunctival sac every 2 hours or less frequently according to severity of infection. Trachoma (adjunctive treatment): 2 drops every 4 hours.

10% Solution with Methylcellulose: 1 or 2 drops into the lower conjunctival sac every 2 or 3 hours during the day and less often at night.

10% Ointment: Apply a small amount 4 times daily and at bedtime. The ointment may be used adjunctively with either of the solution forms.

Availability And Storage: Ointment: Each g of ophthalmic ointment contains: sulfacetamide sodium USP 10% in a sterile petrolatum base. Nonmedicinal ingredients: benzalkonium chloride, methylparaben, propylparaben, sorbitan monolaurate and white petrolatum. Tubes of 3.5 g. Store away from heat.

Solution: Each mL of ophthalmic solution contains: sulfacetamide sodium USP in sterile buffered 30% aqueous solution and 10% aqueous solution with methylcellulose USP. Nonmedicinal ingredients: 10%: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, methylparaben, monobasic sodium phosphate, propylparaben, sodium thiosulfate and water. 30%: methylparaben, monobasic sodium phosphate, propylparaben, sodium thiosulfate and water. Plastic dropper bottles of 15 mL. Store between 2 and 30°C.
