Adalat XL is a medication that is used to treat high blood pressure, or hypertension inadults, as well as angina. Adalat XL is in a class of medications called calcium channelblockers, and works by widening and relaxing your blood vessels to help improve your blood flow.Your doctor may prescribe Adalat XL for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Drinking alcohol can lower your blood pressure, which may increase certain side effects ofAdalat XL. You should not drink alcohol while taking Adalat XL.

Adalat XL is a part of a complete program that your doctor has prescribed for you. Thisprogram includes diet, exercise, weight control, and possibly other medications. Follow yourdiet, medication, and exercise routines closely.

Adalat XL is in FDA pregnancy category C. We do not know if Adalat XL can harm an unborn baby.Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or if you plan to become pregnant before taking Adalat XL.It is known that Adalat XL passes into breast milk and could cause harm to a nursing baby, so youshould not breast-feed while you are taking Adalat XL.

Before You Take Adalat XL

You should not take Adalat XL if you are allergic to nifedipine.

Before taking Adalat XL, tell your doctor if you have congestive heart failure, liver disease,kidney disease, low blood pressure or if you have recently had a heart attack.

Tell your doctor if you have coronary artery disease or digestive problems before beginningtreatment with Adalat XL.

While you are taking Adalat XL try to avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lyingposition, as it may cause you to feel dizzy. Be cautious when getting up, and do so slowly toavoid falling.

Adalat XL Drug Interactions

You should inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following:

• acarbose (Precose)
• antibiotics like clarithromycin (Biaxin), dalfopristin/quinupristin (Synercid), erythromycin(E.E.S., EryPed, Ery-Tab, Erythrocin, Pediazole) and telithromycin (Ketek)
• antidepressants like nefazodone
• antifungal medications like itraconazole (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Extina, Ketozole, Nizoral,Xolegal), miconazole (Oravig) and voriconazole (Vfend)
• beta-blocker medications like Betapace, Blocadren, Corgard, Coreg, Inderal, InnoPran,Lopressor, Normodyne, Tenoretic, Tenormin, Toprol, Trandate and Zebeta
• cimetidine (Tagamet)
• digoxin (Lanoxin)
• fentanyl (Actiq, Duragesic, Fentora) or other narcotic pain relievers
• heart or blood pressure medications like diltiazem (Cartia, Cardizem), nifedipine (Nifedical,Procardia) and verapamil (Calan, Covera, Isoptin, Verelan)
• HIV/AIDS medications like atazanavir (Reyataz), delavirdine (Rescriptor), fosamprenavir(Lexiva), indinavir (Crixivan), nelfinavir (Viracept) and ritonavir (Norvir, Kaletra)
• rifabutin (Mycobutin)
• rifampin (Rifadin, Rifater, Rifamate)
• rifapentine (Priftin)
• seizure medications like carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Tegretol), phenobarbital (Solfoton), andphenytoin (Dilantin)
• sirolimus (Rapamune)
• St. John’swort
• tacrolimus (Prograf)
• warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven)

Other drugs you take that are not listed may interact with Adalat XL. You should tell yourdoctor about all of the medications you use. This includes prescription drugs, vitamins,supplements and herbal products, and over the counter medications. You should not begin taking anew medication without telling your doctor first.

Directions for Taking Adalat XL

Adalat XL should be taken on an empty stomach.

You should take Adalat XL with a full glass of water.

Do not break, chew or crush the tablets. Swallow Adalat XL whole.

Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may interact with Adalat XL, which can lead to potentiallyserious effects. Discuss your use of grapefruit products with your doctor.

You should not drink alcohol while taking Adalat XL.

You should follow the instructions on your prescription label and not take Adalat XL forlonger than recommended by your doctor, or in larger or smaller doses.

Adalat XL should be stored at room temperature, and away from both moisture and heat.

If you miss a dose of Adalat XL you should attempt to take the missed dose as soon as youremember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose do not take the missed dosein addition to your regular dose.

Adalat XL Side Effects

If you experience any of the following adverse effects you should stop taking Adalat XL andseek emergency medical help immediately:

• breathing difficulties
• chest pain or heavy feeling with pain spreading to the arm or shoulder and nausea, sweatingplus a general ill feeling
• fainting
• hives
• jaundice
• numbness and tingling
• pounding or racing heart
• slow, fast or pounding heartbeats
• swelling of your face, lips, throat, tongue, ankles, hands or feet

Less serious side effects may include:

• constipation
• diarrhea
• dizziness
• drowsiness
• headache
• insomnia
• joint pain
• muscle cramps in your legs
• nausea
• rash (mild) and warmth, redness or tingly feeling under skin
• stomach pain or upset stomach
• tired feeling
• urinating more than normal

Adalat XL Description and Dosing

Adalat XL is available as extended release tablets in dosages of 20mg, 30 mg and 60 mg. The 20mg dose is dusty rose, extended-release and imprinted with “ADALAT 20” on one side. The 30 mgdose is dusty rose, extended-release and imprinted with “ADALAT 30” on one side. The 60 mg doseis dusty rose, extended-release and imprinted with “ADALAT 60” on one side.

You should consult your doctor for specific dosing pertaining to you. Do not attempt to alteror change your dose without your physician’s consent.

Ingredients in Adalat XL

Adalat XL contains the active ingredient nifedipine, which is the main ingredient in the 20mg, 30 mg and 60 mg tablets. The 20 mg tablets also contain the inactive ingredients celluloseacetate, hydroxypropylcellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose 2910, magnesium stearate,pharmaceutical shellac, polyethylene glycol 3350, polyethylene oxide, propylene glycol, redferric oxide, sodium chloride, synthetic black iron oxide, and titanium dioxide. The 30 mgtablets also contain the following inactive ingredients: cellulose acetate,hydroxypropylcellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose 2910, magnesium stearate, pharmaceuticalshellac, polyethylene glycol 3350, polyethylene oxide, propylene glycol, red ferric oxide, sodiumchloride, synthetic black iron oxide, and titanium dioxide. Inactive ingredients in the 60 mgtablets include : cellulose acetate, hydroxypropylcellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose 2910,magnesium stearate, pharmaceutical shellac, polyethylene glycol 3350, polyethylene oxide,propylene glycol, red ferric oxide, sodium chloride, synthetic black iron oxide, and titaniumdioxide. All tablets are lactose-free.
