What is Lumigan?

Lumigan is used to treat glaucoma, as well as other causes of high pressure inside your eyes. Lumigan helps to reduce the pressure in your eyes by increasing the amount of fluid that drains from your eyes. Lumigan may also be prescribed for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Key Facts About Lumigan

Lumigan should not be used while you are wearing contact lenses. There is a preservative in Lumigan that can cause a discoloration of soft contact lenses. You should wait at 15 minutes or longer to put your contact lenses in after using Lumigan eye drops.

You should wait at least five (5) minutes after using Lumigan before putting any other eye drops in your eyes that your doctor has prescribed for you to use.

You should be careful not to allow the tip of the Lumigan eye dropper to touch any surface, which includes your eyes or hands. Should the dropper touch any surfaces it could become contaminated, leading to a possible infection of your eye. Eye infections can cause serious damage or even vision loss.

Lumigan is in FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether Lumigan can be harmful to an unborn baby. You should tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant before using Lumigan. Do not use Lumigan if you are breast-feeding as it is not known if Lumigan passes into breast milk.

Before You Take Lumigan

You should not take Lumigan if you are allergic to bimatoprost.

Using Lumigan may cause a gradual change in the color of your eyes, eyelids or eyelashes, as well as an increased growth and thickness of your eyelashes. These changes tend to occur slowly, typically over a period of months or even years. The pigment changes are usually brown. These changes may be permanent, even after you have stopped using Lumigan.

You should avoid using too much of this medication. Use only the amount of Lumigan that your doctor has prescribed for you. If you use too much Lumigan it can actually be counterproductive, and make this medication less effective at lowering the pressure in your eyes.

Lumigan Drug Interactions

There are no particular medications, oral or injectable, that interact with Lumigan. However, you should tell your doctor about all of the medications you use. This includes prescription drugs, vitamins, supplements and herbal products, and over the counter medications. You should not begin taking a new medication without telling your doctor first.

Directions for Taking Lumigan

You should take Lumigan exactly how it was prescribed for you. You should not use Lumigan in larger or smaller amounts, or use it for longer or shorter than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions exactly on your prescription label.

A patient instruction guide comes with your Lumigan prescription which gives you instructions for safe and effective use of this medication. Be sure to follow the instructions for using Lumigan carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.

When you are ready to apply the Lumigan eye drops you should tilt your head back slightly and pull your lower eyelid down to create a small pocket. Hold the dropper steadily above your eye with the tip facing down. You should look up and away from the dropper as you squeeze out a drop. Close your eye after administering the drop for a few seconds. Next, lightly press your finger to the inside corner of the eye (near your nose) for about 1 minute to keep the liquid from draining into your tear duct.

You should only use the amount of drops that your doctor has prescribed for you. Wait at least 5 minutes before applying any additional eye drops that you have been prescribed.

You should not use the eye drops if the liquid has changed colors or if it has particles in it. If this is the case you should contact your doctor for a new prescription.

If you need to have eye surgery, if you have an eye injury or develop an eye infection at any time during your treatment with Lumigan you should tell your doctor immediately.

Lumigan needs to be stored either at room temperature, or in the refrigerator. Do not freeze Lumigan. Keep the bottle tightly closed and away from both moisture and heat.

If you miss a dose of Lumigan you should attempt to take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose do not take the missed dose in addition to your regular dose.
