What is VESIcare?

VESIcare is a medication that treats symptoms of overactive bladder by reducing muscle spasms of your bladder and urinary tract. Your doctor may have prescribed VESIcare for you to treat the symptoms of overactive bladder, like incontinence or frequent and urgent urination.

VESIcare may also be used for conditions that are not described in this medication guide.

 

Key Facts About VESIcare

The use of VESIcare can decrease perspiration and make you more prone to heat stroke. You should avoid becoming dehydrated and overheated during exercise and in hot weather while taking VESIcare.

VESIcare is in FDA pregnancy category C. VESIcare is not known to harm an unborn baby. You should tell your doctor if you are pregnant, or if you plan to become pregnant before you start to take VESIcare. You should not use VESIcare without telling your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby, as we do not know if VESIcare passes into breast milk.

VESIcare may cause you to experience blurry vision, or it may impair your thinking and reaction time. You should be cautious when driving or doing any activity that requires you to be alert and see clearly.

If you experience rare, but possible, serious side effects like hot and dry skin, extreme thirst, severe constipation or stomach pain, burning when you urinate, or the inability to urinate you should stop taking VESIcare and call your doctor immediately.

 

Before You Take VESIcare

You should not use VESIcare if you are allergic to solifenacin.

You may not be a candidate to take VESIcare if you have untreated or uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma.

If you are unable to urinate you should not take VESIcare.

Tell your doctor if you have a stomach disorder that causes delayed emptying, as this may be a reason for you not to take VESIcare.

Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney disease or glaucoma before starting treatment with VESIcare.

Let your doctor know if you a blockage in your intestines or a history of Long QT syndrome before taking VESIcare..

 

VESIcare Drug Interactions

You should inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following:

  • antibiotics like clarithromycin (Biaxin), erythromycin (E.E.S., EryPed, Ery-Tab, Erythrocin, Pediazole), levofloxacin (Levaquin), moxifloxacin (Avelox), pentamidine (NebuPent, Pentam), rifampin (Rifater, Rifadin, Rifamate) and telithromycin (Ketek)
  • antidepressants like amitriptylline (Elavil, Vanatrip, Limbitrol), clomipramine (Anafranil), nefazodone and desipramine (Norpramin)
  • antifungal medications like itraconazole (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), miconazole (Oravig), posaconazole (Noxafil) and voriconazole (Vfend)
  • anti-malaria medications like chloroquine (Aralen) and mefloquine (Lariam)
  • arsenic trioxide (Trisenox)
  • conivaptan (Vaprisol)
  • dolasetron (Anzemet)
  • droperidol (Inapsine)
  • heart rhythm medications like amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone), dofetilide (Tikosyn), disopyramide (Norpace), dronedarone (Multaq), ibutilide (Corvert), procainamide (Procan, Pronestyl), propafenone (Rythmol), quinidine (Quin-G) and sotalol (Betapace)
  • hepatitis C medications like boceprevir (Victrelis) and telaprevir (Incivek)
  • HIV/AIDS medications like atazanavir (Reyataz), delavirdine (Rescriptor), fosamprenavir (Lexiva), indinavir (Crixivan), nelfinavir (Viracept), ritonavir (Norvir, Kaletra) and saquinavir (Invirase)
  • imatinib (Gleevec)
  • isoniazid (for treating tuberculosis)
  • methadone (Methadose, Diskets, Dolophine)
  • nicardipine (Cardene)
  • ondansetron (Zofran)
  • psychiatric medications like chlorpromazine (Thorazine), clozapine (FazaClo, Clozaril), haloperidol (Haldol), pimozide (Orap), thioridazine (Mellaril) and ziprasidone (Geodon)
  • tacrolimus (Prograf)

Other drugs you take that are not listed may interact with VESIcare. You should tell your doctor about all of the medications you use. This includes prescription drugs, vitamins, supplements and herbal products, and over the counter medications. You should not begin taking a new medication without telling your doctor first.

 

Directions for Taking VESIcare

You should take VESIcare exactly as your doctor has prescribed you to. Do not use VESIcare in larger or smaller amounts, or for shorter or longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label exactly.

You should take VESIcare with a full glass (8 oz.) of water.

You can take VESIcare with or without food.

Do not break, chew or crush the VESIcare tablet. You should swallow the tablet whole.

If you miss a dose of VESIcare you should attempt to take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose do not take the missed dose in addition to your regular dose.

Keep VESIcare at room temperature, and away from both heat and moisture. Be sure to keep the bottle tightly closed.

 

VESIcare Side Effects

If you experience any of the following adverse effects you should stop taking VESIcare and seek medical help immediately:

  • allergic reaction that includes breathing difficulties, hives and swelling of your face, lips, throat or tongue
  • constipation and severe stomach pain for 3 days or longer
  • extreme thirst with hot, dry skin
  • pain or burning when you urinate
  • skin rash that is severe and can include a fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain and followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling
  • urinating less than usual or not at all

Less serious VESIcare side effects may include:

  • blurred vision
  • body aches
  • constipation (mild)
  • dizziness
  • dry eyes
  • dry mouth
  • fever
  • flu symptoms
  • nausea
  • sore throat
  • stomach upset
  • tired feeling

VESIcare Description and Dosing

VESIcare is available in film-coated tablets in dosages of 5 mg and 10 mg. The 5 mg tablets are round, light yellow and debossed with 150. The 10 mg tablets are round, light pink and debossed with 151.

The recommended dose of VESIcare is 5 mg once daily, and if the 5 mg dose is well tolerated your doctor may increase your dose to 10 mg once daily. However, VESIcare dosages vary for each individual based on their age, condition and situation. Your doctor will tell you the right dose of VESIcare for you to take. Do not change or alter your VESIcare dose without talking to your doctor first.

If you suspect that you have overdosed with the VESIcare you should seek emergency help immediately.

 

Ingredients in VESIcare

VESIcare contains the active ingredient solifenacin succinate, Additional inactive ingredients include lactose monohydrate, corn starch, hypromellose 2910, magnesium stearate, talc, polyethylene glycol 8000 and titanium dioxide with yellow ferric oxide (5 mg VESIcare tablet) or red ferric oxide (10 mg VESIcare tablet).
