A recent announcement by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services that the nearly 7 million U.S. people with Medicare coverage are saving an average of $1000 per person under the Affordable Care Act. Yet the “Doughnut Hole” remains a significant issue.

The sometimes-controversial Affordable Care Act (ACA) has saved Medicare consumers nearly $7 billion dollars according to a recent announcement by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. While the debate rages on about how various parts of the ACA, sometimes referred to as “Obamacare,” will play out, the benefits of the law are already visible, and millions of Americans are taking advantage of them.

The Affordable Care Act has provisions in place to close the “Doughnut Hole”, but it will be a gradual process taking place over a period of years. In the meantime, seniors and others with Medicare coverage continue to face challenges paying the high prices of their medications.
